We're going to AFRICA! | Fishers on Mission

When my husband initially began looking into his options for residency training, one of the first things that drew us to In His Image was the opportunity to participate in world medical missions as a part of his training. Having come from a family of missionaries (my mom grew up in Haiti where my grandparents served for nearly 15 years of their 24 years as full-time missionaries), I have always has a passion for serving others through international mission work, and knew that the opportunity to live overseas for several months of our  training would be invaluable in our journey as a family to embrace a life of contentment and courage as we seek to spread the gospel through medicine.

Thus, when we first found out that April 2018 would be our first "missions month", I was giddy, even though I had NO IDEA where the Lord would call us to go. Little did I know, God would orchestrate the beginnings of what I believe will be a beautiful friendship with the Jones family, a missionary family who graduated from In His Image, last June at the In His Image summer retreat. Ever since, Vanessa Jones and I have followed each other on social media, chatted about motherhood, medicine, and photography; and I have dreamed about having the opportunity to visit and serve alongside them.

So, what a joy it was to get confirmation from the Lord through some trusted mentors earlier this month that we indeed should spend the month of April living and serving alongside the Jones family in their home of Kapsowar, Kenya.

We are partnering with In His Image International and Samaritan's Purse for our trip, and will be traveling in late March to Kenya (on three separate flights totaling over 24 hours) and will be residing in Kapsowar for nearly a month at the mission hospital base where Jake will be dedicating his time and medical skills to bring both physical and spiritual healing to the Marakwet people native to the area.  And to answer your question in advance... YES, we will be traveling on those loooooong international flights with BOTH kiddos (and covet your prayers as we do!).

While Jake serves at the hospital, I will be serving and assimilating into the community, and look forward to being a source of encouragement and hospitality for the full-time missionaries that live in Kapsowar. Our aim is to be a source of refreshment for them as we help them carry the load during our time there. I am also greatly looking forward to utilizing my skills in photography and videography to document the stories of the people we meet, and the Lord’s work in Kenya, with hopes that my work will serve as a way for both of our sending organizations (In His Image International and Samaritan’s Purse) to raise awareness and funds for world missions. (There is a possibility I might even get to capture a birth while I'm there! Goodness, what a joy it would be to support and celebrate some beautiful Kenyan mamas as they welcome their little ones!)

We are so humbled by this opportunity to serve, explore a little corner of the amazing world God created, and expose our kiddos to the great needs in our world, as well as help them to see others through Christ’s eyes.

We pray to come home tired in our bodies but refreshed in the Spirit, having seen first-hand God’s love for the nations, and the beautiful fruit that can come from stripping away what distracts and digging into the Kenyan “soil” that we know the Lord has called us to sow in during this season. We cannot even begin to imagine all that we will experience during our month in Kenya... but know that God will be glorified!
