October is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Truly, no parents should ever have to face the loss of a child… but when it comes to the world of childbearing, the reality is that 1 in 4 women will experience pregnancy or infant loss.

This reality can be painful and harsh, especially when journeying through it alone… which is why I believe it is so important to know what resources are out there for mamas facing loss, because even thought you might not ever personally experience a loss, chances are that you will know someone that will, and the support you can lend to them in that season could be there lifeline.

Below is a list of my top 4 miscarriage, stillbirth and infant loss resources available to mamas:

1. Stillbirthday: Created after Heidi, the founder, lost her fourth-born in 2011, Stillbirthday is one of the ultimate resources for both families facing loss, and birth professionals working with families. They also offer the most comprehensive birth and bereavement doula training programs in the world, of which I am currently a student as I strive to serve my birth story and Silas Program families well.

2. Still Standing Magazine: Teeming with articles from other moms and dads that have “been there,” this resources encompasses such a vast array of personal, cultural, and religious perspectives on loss, the grief process, and healing.

3. M.E.N.D. (Mommies Enduring Neonatal Death): This Christian non-profit seeks to provide hop and healing through a family’s journey after the loss of their baby, and has a nationwide online support group, as well as local support groups in 5 states. They strive to break down the isolation barrier that often accompanies this journey.

4. Hannah’s Hope: Based in my current hometown of Tulsa, OK - This organization has sent Hope Boxes all over the world to encourage and minister to families who have lost a little one. Kathryn, the founder, has three heavenly babies - and has such a genuine love for serving this community. You can check out her story below.

How you can help someone facing pregnancy or infant loss:

Hannah’s Hope is one of my #1 go-to resources when seeking to support another mama/family facing loss. Their Hope Boxes can easily be ordered online through their website, and ship directly to the family full of both practical and keepsake items to honor their baby.

Other ways to lend support can include taking a meal, offering to help with childcare if the family has other children, helping the family focus on self-care (a gift card for to a coffee shop or for massage, a mug with a favorite tea, or a little bath set are all wonderful ways to do this!), finding a way to honor their baby (a candle to burn or small tree to plant in their honor, etc.), or even simply offering a hug and an acknowledgement of their loss. Any way you can find that honors their journey and/or meets a need is invaluable!

Do you know someone who has experience pregnancy or infant loss? Reach out to them this month and let them know you are thinking of/praying for them, and mention their little one (by name even if possible). Your acknowledgement will honor their little one, and encourage the heart in this season.

"The Lord is near to the broken-hearted, and saves the crushed in spirit." - Psalm 34:18
